Cameron Holt is fortunate enough to survive the initial outbreak that turns his New England island community into a hive of the undead. So is his son, Ethan. Now, the only thing keeping Holt going is the determination to rescue his son from the undead...or remove him permanently from their ranks. Unfortunately, zombies aren't the only thing getting in his way.

Orpheus Mr Dan H DeWitt 9781466288607 Books

After reading the sampling of this book in Dewitt's short stories collection, I immediately went for the full novel. The characters were thought out and the story-line interlocked the characters and their plights well.

SPOILERS!!!!!

Parts were unrealistic in the sense of the overall reasoning behind the the epidemic and the sudden skilled military techniques of the survivors, although the situation has only spanned a short while in the beginning of the novel. Not a big deal as the story was what the author created so I still quite enjoyed it.

The "secret lovers" we meet in the church were likable no doubt as they didn't intrude upon anybody anymore than the rest of the survivors but I felt a little after-school special was being presented for a couple pages about over-victimizing these two when the situation was really irrelevant given the dire circumstances. There is no debate over who they were and I was pleased to see their worth and usage, but the victimizing of them more so than the zombie concern of all living just seemed out of place and forced to prove a point.

All in all though, no regrets and no worries. I would continue on with future stories by this author.

Orpheus Mr Dan H DeWitt 9781466288607 Books Reviews

Gah! I'm so tired of reviewers saying eBooks have errors because they don't use editors! Do they not read and notice the errors made in books from legacy publishers? For crying out loud just read the book and enjoy the story...drop the armchair edits.

Okay now that THAT'S out my system let us discuss zombies.

Dan DeWitt has an afterword in the book, which I love when authors include them, that talks about his years of zombie research and how he came to write Orpheus and formulate a way for zombies to realistically take over. The resulting plot is awesome.

As I was reading ... I will admit there were moments where I thought "Come on, this has been done.". The story still carried me through. Good thing, because what the author did here was not reinvent zombies. What he did was deliver a very well-written, exciting, tense, scary, believable tale about people in a crisis that happens to involve zombies.

However, for the monster afficionado, there is a new take on zombies called Jeckylls. I won't spoil the surprise.

As I was reading I couldn't help but think of the grandmaster King's The Stand. The author here does what King did so well, by making his apocalyptic crew real people. The parts about Cameron and his son that lead up to all hell breaking loose are some of my favorites. The scene playing basketball would be an amazing bit of writing in any book, about anything.

The last part that makes this stand out is the author's seemingly valid knowledge of warfare and military tactics. Probably the most realistic that I've ever read.

These aren't your daddy's zombies here, and this isn't a mindless munch fest. This is a book about love, courage, survival and redemption.

In the middle of all that a bunch of zombies get their heads blown off, and that's pretty freakin cool too.
Its rare that the first chapter of a book makes you think "This is going to be an great book, I hope" Well, there is no reason to hope. I read a ton of zombie books and most are the same and rarely is there an original idea or spin on the zombie genre. Well, this book has it and then some.

I would highly recommend this book. For $.99 its beyond a steal. I've read books for $9.99 that are no where near as well written or entertaining as this book. The characters are easy to relate to, the plot is full of spins, and it doesn't bog down in sappy metaphors. Its just a straight up good & fast paced read.

I'll be very interested in reading any further books by this author. It's nice to see some creativity in the zombie world, as opposed to everyone who thinks that they can just steal from Max Brooks and Mr. George, and other greats. Anyone can write an end of times novel and through some zombies into the mix. Rarely is there anyone who can switch it up and throw some new ideas to the game, but ORPHEUS accomplishes this.
I downloaded "Underneath" by David Dewitt, a book of short stories, and enjoyed it so much. At the end he included the first couple chapters of his zombie book, "Orpheus." I had to find out what happened next, so I bought it. Orpheus is a great zombie book, and I see Dewitt's writing growing stronger. There are a lot of zombie books out there, zombie's are the "in" thing right now, and so many of them just aren't good. Then there are some very good books like "Ashes" or "Rot & Ruin." DeWitt's Orpheus, while maybe not as polished, is a terrific entry into the zombie genre.

The plot is a man trying to find his college aged son after the zombie breakout. The storyline follows several groups of survivors, good and bad guys, and zombies. There are plot twists, and turns, things I never saw coming. Dewitt even comes up with a new and believable zombie type.

I think some of the best books in this genre have characters we come to care about, a good story line, and then zombies. Orpheus has it all. I am looking forward to more books by the author.
ORPHEUS is an interesting tale of man vs zombie on an island resort. The main character, nicknamed Orpheus (at first I was picturing Morpheus from THE MATRIX), is a tough ex-AF man who has a personal mission which seems to align with the needs of the zombie-threatened community he finds himself part of. He wants to find his family, especially his son. To do this, he needs to locate survivors and clear the island of these zombies, place by place.

The second part of the book follows his son, Ethan (okay, this time I kept thinking of Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible) and the band of survivors he has hooked up with, and their experiences and exploits in surviving the zombies.

As the two finally begin to come closer together, more is revealed about the causes of this zombie epidemic and about some of the people on the island.

This was a solid, well written read with great pacing and good storytelling. It's my first experience with author Dan DeWitt, and I'll watch for more by him in the future.
